I was planning on waiting a few more months until really starting the potty training because I am due to have a baby any day now. But, she has been sitting on the potty and letting me know when she needs to "poop." She sat on there tonight and actually went! I think she is ready, but I need some advice considering she is my first. Does she need to start wearing pull ups now? Any advice would be helpful!

Well, personally, I’d avoid pull ups altogether. My daughter is 21 months old and I went and got her some when she was showing all the signs, and she just figured they were a prettier(and more expensive) diaper, so she’d just go in them. We went and got her big girl underwear, but I scared her the first day she was wearing them because she had an accident and we rushed to the bathroom a little too quickly, so she decided to not potty train at all right now, lol. So we’re back to where we started.
If you haven’t got one already, get her either her own potty or a toddler toliet seat. Work with her about being able to pull down her pants, and don’t buy any one piece outfits, overalls, or any other fall clothing that she can’t get off quickly. A potty book is always helpful, I found an Elmo one at walmart, my daughter loves to sit on her potty and read it. Also, set your hot water tank to 120(or whatever the recommended temp is) and make sure she has a stool to reach, and maybe her own special soap(kandoo is soo cute) so you can teach her to wash her own hands(my daughter’s favorite part, lol). Decide what reward system you will use, whether it be excessive praise(scared my brat), a candy reward(we’re using sixlets) or a sticker chart(she was more interested in eating the stickers for some reason) and make sure you stay consistent with it. Don’t push her, but do reward her when she goes. We put the undies on under my daughter’s diaper, so she knows exactly when she’s wet/starts to go, and is learning to tell me, and yet it cuts down on the mess. Our landlord so nicely put cream colored carpet all over the apartment we live in, so we have to be real careful about messes, lol. Sure I have to do laundry every few days or so, but I have a container full off soapy water that I put the wet undies into so they don’t start to stink and I don’t have to run the washer everyday. But definitely keep the diapers in stock for a while yet, because as you know, she’ll probably revert a bit when her new sibling comes as an attention thing. Just try to turn it into praise and lots of attention for her if she should continue the potty training.

Good luck!

My daughter just turned four and we just met with a specialist about our
concerns (3 month waiting list at one Dr, 4 month wait for another Dr) this has
been going on since last October!

Finally my concerns have been validated and my daughter has signs of Autism and
Sensory Issues. We are still in the process of getting her evaulated before we
know the clear diagnosis. Anyway, I have been online trying to learn anything I
can about Autism and Sensory Issues and I see that this GFCF is HUGE! How can I get started with this eating program? I would like to start this right away.

I also heard of "Clay Baths’ and wonder if anyone is familair with them. My Dr. also suggested supplements of Multivitamin w/B complex, Zinc, Calcium, Mahnesium and Omega 3DHA 200 mg (my daughter is 40 lbs.) Can anyone recommend good vitamins/supplements for her that are GF?

She doesn’t eat many foods, so this may be interesting. She mostly eats noodles
w/butter, peanut butter and jelly, pancakes, cereal, grapes, bananas,
watermelon, peas, green beans. No meat, no juice, no eggs.

Last question…like I said she is 4 years old and we are still unable to potty
train her. I have read every book, tried every technique that my dr. recommend,
friends recommend, etc. Potty dolls, potty videos, potty books, stickers,
rewards, etc. nothing works.

Here’s the issue…she sits on the potty, wipes, flushes, washes hands, but
NEVER actually relieves herself in the potty. She pushes and I "might" hear a
drop (or it could be my imaginatation). But really she just can’t seem to
relieve herself on the potty, like she doesn’t know how?!?! She does all the
steps, but not the actual action.

She is in preschool during the day and because she wants to be in the class with
other 4 yr olds (that are potty trained) we had to make some adjustments. In
the morning before school, I put her in a pull up so she can relieve herself,
then we put her in panties for school. They put her on the potty like the other
kids every 1/2 hr. but nothing. At lunch time they put a pull up on her and
bingo! She relieves herself. They take it off, pu the panties back on and she’s
fine. When I pick her up from preschool she is in panties and we go home, I put
her on the potty…nothing….the minute that pull-up is on, she goes. It’s
like she can only go in the pull-up….well, I thought if I don’t put her in the
pull up, she will have an "Accident" and will start to understand that she needs
to go in the potty…so I figured, no more pull ups! HA! SHE HELD IT FOR 12
HOURS!! until it was bedtime and I had to put a pull up on her….how can she
hold it for that long??? (and I know that she can get a bladder infection, so
I’m not doing that again!!). Poor girl, I am really at wits end. If anyone has
suggestions, I’M LISTENING.

try sitting her on the potty with the pullup on (and pulled up) and see if she will go. Even if she is still peeing in the pullup at least she’s sitting on the potty and that’s a step in the right direction. In time she will understand. I hope the best for you!

what are some great ways to getting my 18 month old little girl potty trained?

We just started our son about a week ago and he has a Baby Bjorn potty and he is able to sit on it all on his own and it is a good size for him. Here is a link with pretty much what we are doing with him… http://raisingrocco.wordpress.com/category/potty-training/ He has been making great progress. The beginning of the week he had a lot of accidents, but he now will go and sit on the potty all by himself and pee, get up and pull the insert out and proudly walk with us to the big toilet and dump it in there. Today was his first day in underwear (we decided to have him go naked to make it easier to get him on the potty when needed), we put him in them halfway through the day and he kept them dry all the rest of the day. When he would go to sit on the potty we would help him with them. We haven’t had to use candy or anything like that and so far so good! He loves it, yesterday and today is when he has really caught on. Way easier than I thought it would be. He will be 18 months on the 25th of this month.

Before you can toilet train your toddler, you’ll need to buy them a potty to learn on. Here’s how to pick one that will help guarantee toilet-training success.

To complete this How-To you will need:

A toddler ready to potty train
A store or web site that sells potty chairs
A step stool (optional) (optional) (optional)
Stickers (optional) (optional) (optional)
Markers (optional) (optional) (optional)

Step 1: Go to the store

Shop for a potty in person, and take your child with you. They’re the one who’ll be using it, so they should have a say in which one you bring home. If you think you’ll get a better deal online, pick out the potty you want at a store, and then go on the web to order it.

Step 2: Kick the tires

Peruse the store’s stock. There are two types — a portable potty, and a seat that fits on top of the regular toilet. Let your child sit on any potty they seem interested in. Look for ones that fit them comfortably, and won’t tip over. A high seat back is a plus.

Tip: You can opt for an insert for the regular toilet seat — called a potty ring –that will make it small enough for them to sit on. Keep a stool in the bathroom so they can safely climb onto the seat.

Step 3: Look for standard features

Check for features, like a removable bowl that you can lift out and empty into the regular toilet, and a splash guard — a lip on the front of the seat that will prevent urine from hitting the floor. If you have a boy, you may want to get a potty with a deflector, which will keep his urine from spraying on the floor.

Step 4: Consider extras

Consider other bells and whistles. Potties feature everything from toilet paper holders to sound effects like flushing and music.

Tip: Avoid potty chairs with large seams or crevices, which are difficult to clean and can pinch the skin. If you buy a potty ring, run your hand along the inside before you buy it to check for any sharp edges.

Step 5: Set up at home

Bring the potty home, and put it in the bathroom. If your toddler wants to decorate the seat with stickers or markers, let them. The more they can do to make it their own, the sooner they’ll be willing to actually use it.

I am interested in how to "potty" train a Shih Tzu puppy. There is a "training video" that I can buy on the net but I do not want to spend the money. Does anyone out there know of a "FREE training" site or have any other suggestions. Any other tips that would help me to have a "happy healthy puppy" would be greatly appreciated!
and by the way….I DON’T HAVE MY PUPPY YET EMILY! But thanks for the info!
and my puppy is a male…I understand there are difference between training male and female dogs….

I hate to say this but shih tzu’s are notoriously hard to potty train. Most tiny dogs are… not because of the dog but because of the owner. See, they have very tiny pee’s and it’s easy to over look a small spot.

You still have to take the dog outside on a specific schedule. Within 10 minutes after eating, right after a nap, etc.

Check the web, you’ll find all you need to know. Just be Really consistent or it could take you seriously like a year to fully potty train her.
