Try to make potty training a fun experience for your child, they can act it out with their favourite teddy to show that they understand. It is important not to put a nappy on your little one during the day when you are potty training as they will see this as the most comfortable and convenient option to go toilet in their nappy instead of telling you they need to go potty.

Also we found when Millie was potty training if she wore knickers around the house it lulled her into a false sense of security and she often wet them thinking she was still wearing a nappy, so in her case it was best to be completely bare! Perhaps the summertime is a better time to start when loose fitting clothes can be worn without underwear.

You will need to start by asking your child frequently to go to the potty because they may not realise when they need to go, so every hour or so when you suspect they may be full sit them on the potty and ask them to go wee wee and poopies. It can help for them to associate motions with sounds so making the shhhh and plop sound and praising them when they can identify which one they have done will make the experience more enjoyable for all. Never hurry your child or punish them if they have an accident. It is difficult for little people to build control and understanding, so a kind and guiding hand and plenty of hugs and encouragement is the best thing you can do for them, allowing them to build confidence and develop at their own pace.
